The 3G Network Transition

Major telecommunications providers in Australia, including Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone, have initiated the process of phasing out their 3G networks. This transition is part of the broader shift towards 4G and 5G network technologies.

When Will Australia's 3G Networks Be Shut Down?

Australia’s major mobile network operators, have already started the process of phasing out their 3G networks. Here’s the timeline you need to be aware of:

Vodafone: will switch off its 3G network entirely on December 15, 2023. Find out more
Telstra: Telstra will follow suit, with all its 3G services ending on June 30, 2024. Find out more
Optus: Optus will be the last to shut its 3G doors in September 2024. Find out more

If your elevator is still using a 3G emergency phone, these dates are crucial for you.

How This May Affect Your Emergency Phone?

If your elevator’s emergency phone uses 3G OR 4G, it will cease to function as the 3G network is phased out. This poses safety concerns. Elevator owners must prioritise upgrading their Lift Emergency Phone connection to ensure individuals trapped in an elevator can contact our 24/7 call centre for assistance.

Some older 4G phones that do not have a feature called ‘VoLTE’ (Voice over Long Term Evolution) will not be able to make and receive voice calls.

It is a legal requirement to ensure your Lift Emergency Telephone is “safe to operate”

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Navigating the 3G Network Transition

3G is the third generation of wireless mobile telecommunications technology. “G” stands for Generation and the higher the number, the newer the technology. Each generation of technology uses radio frequency spectrum bands.

As technology evolves, people are using 3G less and less. That’s why telecommunications providers made the decision to repurpose 3G so that they can improve the 4G network and boost the 5G rollout.

If your device doesn’t work with the 4G network or relies on 3G network for emergency calls, then you won’t be able to make an emergency call to our 24/7 call centre or contact Triple Zero (000) for assistance.

It’s important that you check with the device manufacturer to confirm if you’ll be impacted.

If you’re using a device that relies on 3G 900MHz spectrum only, you won’t be able to connect to the 3G network once the network is phased out.

We suggest checking your device manual or with the manufacturer via their website or by calling them, to confirm if your device will be affected.

Below is a list of the top 25 most common devices listed on the Optus website that may be affected:
Alcatel 2038
Alcatel OneTouch2045
Apple iPhone 5
Apple iPhone 5C
Apple iPhone 5S
Aspera A42
Doro 6521
Doro PhoneEasy 623
OPTUS Google Pixel 2 XL Huawei E5251s-2
Huawei E5331
Huawei Y6
Prime Nokia 301
Oppo A57 Oppo F1s
Oppo F5 Youth
Optus X Smart
Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini
Samsung Galaxy S5 ZTE
Blade A0605
iPad Air
iPad Retina
iPad mini
Retina iPad mini
iPad mini 3

Note: Due to the number of device brands, makes and countries, telecommunication companies are unable to provide a comprehensive list of all devices that may be affected.

If you’ve confirmed your device won’t be affected, then great news, you should be able to use your device as usual.

Just double-check that 4G VoLTE is enabled in your settings (check with your manufacturer if you’re unsure how to do this)

To address this transition, we recommend taking the following steps:

Step 1: Elevator Inspection Check your elevator’s emergency phone for its connectivity type.

STEP 2: Contact Easy Living If unsure about your phone’s compatibility or its reliance on 3G, contact our team for assistance.

STEP 3: If you Need to Upgrade Easy Connect is the solution.

To see if your device will be affected, we recommend you check the user manual or with your device manufacturer. You can visit their website or give them a call.

In technical terms, you’re looking to confirm:

  1. If your device is reliant on 3G 900MHz spectrum for voice and/or data service.
  2. If your device supports 4G VoLTE (including VoLTE Emergency calling) If you’re using your device to make and receive voice calls, then your device needs to support 4G VoLTE and have VoLTE enabled in your device settings ASAP.
  3. If your device is compatible with 4G 700 MHz (B28) spectrum L700MHz is low band 4G spectrum used some providers for optimal 4G coverage.

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) lets you make phone calls over the 4G (LTE) network. Your mobile device will use 4G to make and receive these calls in areas where 4G (LTE) is available. When the 3G network closes VoLTE will be required to make or receive phone calls.

It is important to note that: – 3G phones do not have VoLTE; and – Not all 4G/5G phones have VoLTE and/or are compatible with the network.

We strongly recommend that if you have a 3G mobile device, you upgrade to a 4G/5G mobile device that is VoLTE capable and compatible ASAP.

If you already have a 4G/5G mobile device, we strongly recommend that you check that your device is VoLTE capable and compatible.

If you have a 4G iPhone:

1. Go to Settings
2. Select Mobile
3. Select Mobile Data Options
4. Select Enable 4G.
5. Select Voice & Data If available, turn on VoLTE.

If you have a 5G iPhone, VoLTE is automatically enabled on your device.

VoLTE will typically be activated on your mobile phone within 4 hours of completing the above steps.

Ensure your mobile phone’s operating system is up to date. Once it’s up-to-date, VoLTE will typically be enabled on your device within 4 hours. Refer to your user manual or seek technical assistance if you need help on how to ensure your phone’s operating system is up to date.
